Art Of Healing | A Glimpse of Cardiac Surgery

My professional background is in engineering with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Houston, Texas, USA, followed by a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada. Having spent much of my early life in technical education, rigors of academics left little time for introspection and self-reflection. With a penchant for fine art from an early age, my interests drifted from electrical engineering rather quickly and moved towards art. Following a course in representational art at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto, Canada and better equipped with formal technique, I began doing portraits and landscapes in charcoal, pastels, and oils. An interest that essentially began as a hobby, turned into a passion in short order. To explore further, I needed my own source material which led me to photography, a vast subject in itself. The camera’s ability to capture the play of light and shadows is alluring. Today, photography has also become a major avenue of my visual art expression. Professionally, working with Dr. Garg, a cardiothoracic surgeon, provided me with a unique insight into cardiac surgery as experienced by patients and their families. I decided to use my background in art and photography to present a photographic essay in cardiac surgery which culminated into this book. Photographs in this book have been taken with a Nikon D810 and a Leica MP 240.

Raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Garg graduated with a Cum Laude Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Ottawa Medical School after attending two years of a four-year Bachelor of Science program from Queens University at Kingston, Ontario. Following a comprehensive Surgical Internship from the University of Toronto, he continued training in General Surgery at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. With a keen interest in Cardiac Surgery, he continued with further surgical training in Cardiothoracic Surgery, also at the University of Western Ontario. He received his second fellowship in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He then obtained a Fellowship in Cardiopulmonary Transplantation. In addition to his Canadian fellowships, Dr. Garg is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and the Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons. He is an Active staff and Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Health Sciences North, Sudbury, Ontario. He has been in cardiac surgical practice for over twenty years.

With a background in photography, the author through a collection of artful images provides a window into the typically closed operating room doors of a cardiac surgeon. The Art of Healing - A Glimpse of Cardiac Surgery describes all stages of Coronary artery bypass grafting, including anesthesia, going on the cardiopulmonary bypass machine, vein and arterial grafting, coming off the cardiopulmonary bypass machine, chest closure, patient recovery, intensive care unit stay, and finally the patient's three month post-operative progress visit. Coronary artery bypass grafting is the most common procedure in cardiac surgery. With millions affected by cardiac disease and it being the most common cause of death in North America, this book offers a unique opportunity to follow a cardiac surgeon as he performs the surgery. It provides a clear picture of what happens behind the closed doors of a modern, state of the art cardiac operating room, with easily understandable descriptions and reasoning.
